What I saw in class yesterday reminded me why this matters…
Yesterday I took my first yoga class since having Leo (11 months!!) and noticed a pregnant woman in front of me in the class. It was an open level vinyasa class and the teacher finished the class with belly down back bends, without giving the pregnant student any guidelines on how to modify or what poses she could do instead.
It brought this idea back into my mind- I think that it's beneficial for *all* yoga teachers to complete a Prenatal & Postnatal YTT because whether you’re teaching public classes or working with private clients, there’s a good chance that someone who is pregnant will walk into your class one day. And I truly believe every yoga teacher should feel confident and prepared to support them.
Here are a few reasons why:
1. Pregnant people are showing up — and often not feeling seen. Many yoga classes aren’t designed with pregnancy in mind, and students often feel unsure if what they’re doing is safe. A teacher trained in prenatal & postnatal yoga can make all the difference in helping them feel supported and empowered in their bodies- while still letting them enjoy their favorite weekly vinyasa/hatha/yin etc. class!
2. You’ll stop feeling unsure when a pregnant student shows up. Instead of modifying on the fly or feeling nervous, you’ll know exactly how to support them safely and confidently—whether you’re teaching vinyasa, yin, or anything in between.
3. It opens up new teaching opportunities. Offering prenatal, postnatal, or mom & baby yoga classes allows you to support your community in a deeply meaningful way—and build a specialty that truly sets you apart.
4. You’ll become a more confident and capable teacher. Learning how to support pregnant and postpartum students gives you a deeper understanding of anatomy, breath, and emotional holding. It’s not just useful for prenatal classes—it enhances how you show up for all your students.
5. You’ll help close a major gap in the yoga world. So many yoga teachers feel unsure when a pregnant student walks in. With training, you’ll be one of the few who can hold that space with skill and confidence—and your students will remember it.
