5 Things Every Yoga Teacher Should Know Before a Pregnant Student Walks Into Class
Yoga teachers — if a pregnant student walks into your class, you don't need to panic.
But you do need to know how to support her.
Pregnancy isn't just about putting a block under her hands or telling her to "listen to her body." Her body is changing constantly — balance, breathing, core pressure, pelvic floor, energy, mobility, and comfort can all shift from one week to the next. Two students who are both 20 weeks pregnant might need completely different modifications.
Here are a few things I wish every yoga teacher knew.
Don't assume every pregnant student needs the same modifications
Pregnancy shows up differently in every body. Ask questions, pay attention, and give options based on what you're actually seeing and what she's experiencing — not a generic checklist of "pregnancy poses to avoid."
Know how to modify the pose — not just remove it
Instead of automatically telling a pregnant student to skip something, think about the intention of the pose. What is it meant to do for the body? From there, you can change the setup, range of motion, or position so she still gets the benefit — just in a way that's supportive for where she is right now.
Think beyond the belly
It's easy to modify only for the physical shape of a growing belly. But pregnancy affects so much more than that. Breathing, balance, core pressure, pelvic floor function, circulation, energy, and joint stability can all play a role in how a pose feels — sometimes more than the belly itself does.
Give options that still let her feel like part of the class
If something isn't appropriate, offer an alternative that works toward the same intention rather than simply saying, "Skip this." A pregnant student shouldn't feel like she's sitting on the sidelines of her own practice.
Remember that pregnancy is not one-size-fits-all
What feels amazing for one student may feel terrible for another — even if they're at the exact same stage of pregnancy. That's not a contradiction; that's just pregnancy.
